Yesterday we went to see Operation Mincemeat at the Marlowe Theatre, and it was a really enjoyable experience. The musical was both funny and emotional, which made it very engaging throughout.
Since there’s only a five-person cast, the actors have to play multiple roles, and their fast costume and character changes were impressive to watch.
One of the best parts of the show was how perfectly it balanced between comedy and the serious historical events of World War II. The humour kept us entertained, but the musical also showed the importance and risks of the actual Operation Mincemeat mission. It was also cool to watch because we’re actually studying WWII in history class right now.
The staging was creative despite using a fairly simple set, and the energy from the cast kept the performance exciting from the beginning to the end.
The songs were very memorable, and we were still singing when we got home. All of the actors were amazing and had incredible voices, but Charlotte Hanna-Williams’s vocals really stood out. We were both totally blown away by her vocal range and how effortlessly she could belt.
Overall, we thought the production is clever, well-acted, and incredibly entertaining. It takes a historical event and makes it feel fresh, interesting, and super easy to follow. We’d definitely recommend it to other students, history geeks, or anyone who loves musical theatre.
