Jack and the Beanstalk

It’s no exaggeration to say that I’ve BEAN waiting a whole year for this! Ever since the Bristol Hippodrome @bristolhipp announced that this year’s panto would be Jack and the Beanstalk, I had eagerly been anticipating seeing it – and it certainly didn’t disappoint!

When it comes to pantos, we’re not really there for the stories as those are often very familiar fairy tales, but we are here for the entertainment, the atmosphere and the jokes. Jack and the Beanstalk certainly excels in all these areas. I loved how each character really had their own distinct personality. Each one of them was a joy to watch!

I instantly recognised Charlie Brooks, who plays Mrs Blunderbore. It wasn’t long ago when I saw her as the Childcatcher in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang here at the Hippodrome. The roles share quite a few similarities, and she was absolutely perfect once again.

The comedic highlights of the night were certainly Andy Ford as Andy Trot and Richard Cadell as Silly Simon – and of course Sooty and Sweep! Many in the audience last night, especially the adults, were familiar with the famous puppet duo. Cadell blended puppetry, magic and comedy brilliantly, creating some of the show’s very best moments.

Fans of Will Young were in the house last night, enthusiastically sang along to his hits. Young, in his panto debut, plays Spirit of the Beans with great charm, and he even got a few moments to show off his singing talent.

As a musical theatre person, what drew me into the performance was the opening number, ‘Giants in the Sky’ from Into the Woods. The panto features a great variety of music of different genres. The vibrant costumes and set were also spectacular. I particularly enjoyed when Silly Simon flew over the audience on a motorbike and seeing the effect the Giant creates.

Jack and the Beanstalk was exactly what I needed to get me into the festive spirit. With plenty of laugh-out-loud moments and great music, it’s not one to miss. Catch it at the Bristol Hippodrome until 4th January!
