Apparently Ugly

Apparently Ugly is a riotous comedy offering a fresh perspective on a timely subject.

I was invited to see Apparently Ugly a one-act musical comedy, at the Underbelly Boulevard Soho. In this Cinderella spin-off, her stepsisters, Olga and Agnes, are left wondering why they didn’t get a happily-ever-after. Thus begins a magical misadventure where they discover what it means to be beautiful.

The centrepiece of the show is the stepsisters, expertly portrayed by Amber Hegarty and Chloe Way. These two bring excellent comedic flair, as well as a grounded, truthful performance, adding much needed dimension to the show. Their performances were hilarious, heartbreaking, and heartwarming, with divine vocal performances. The titular song, Apparently Ugly was an affirming, beautiful song with masterful composition. The score contains catchy tunes and wonderful ballads. The pre-recorded orchestrations are outstanding, and I’m sure in the future seeing the show with a live band would add an extra layer of charm. The use of space within the theatre was creative, with characters using the aisles and balcony.

The supporting performers, the Godfather played by Elliott Wooster and the Mother played by Nicky Douglas (also the show’s creator) were a riot! Their scene-stealing comedic timing and writing from Nicky Douglas was excellent, and the pantomime-esque elements of their performance were perfect.

Tonally, the show blends honest musical theatre writing, with musical comedy and elements of pantomime. While Nicky Douglas is excellent, the Mother’s comedy sometimes goes too far; a harsher, meaner edge could better serve the message of the show. Which was, overall, delivered in a way that felt real, refreshing and timely. The family show is so digestible, yet it packs a punch with its core message. I believe that the show could be expanded, fleshing out parts of the journey, allowing for further exploration of the show’s themes.

Apparently Ugly will go on to perform at the Underbelly, Bristo Square–Ermintrude this August at the Edinburgh fringe. It’s well worth seeing, I loved it!
